French Bid to Ban Veils Worries Allies, Tourists
Protests in Pakistan, and al-Qaeda warnings, playful tourists Muslims: France’s plan to get rid of the hijab and niqab style hesitate already beyond its borders.
A bill to ban the veil, which aims to uphold the values of the French Republic, is expected to win Senate approval this month. If it passes this hurdle, key French diplomats will face a difficult task to ensure that the ban did not antagonize the government, and deter foreign religious shoppers loaded with cash, or provoke Islamist terrorists.
